It was on today’s date, 30th May, back in 1978 when Blue Ribbon Sports officially changed its name to NIKE Inc. 32 years later, the NIKE78 online gallery has launched.
Participants worldwide were briefed to use sport as inspiration to challenge the function of a pair of NIKE shoes. The online gallery is an ongoing showcase of what has been produced, documenting participant’s journeys from behind the scenes to finished outcomes. Keep checking back for updates of participants outcomes in
the coming weeks.
Many thanks to Mark Jenkins for the ongoing online work for NIKE78.

Since the launch of NIKE78, participants were challenged to creatively re-think the function of a pair NIKE shoes, keeping sport as a central theme.
The online gallery of NIKE78 now launches on the 30th May, coinciding with the original date in 1978 when NIKE became the brand we know it to be today. It will document and expose each participant’s creative journey through an online presentation of ‘sport provoking’ outcomes.
Pictured above is a final sneak preview before the gallery launch, Alex Nash’s concept. Check back on the 30th to see how 78 pairs of NIKEs have evolved.

Diogo Soares’ concept for NIKE78 is based on the idea of air and the moment when a person who is running
doesn’t touch the ground. Aiming to represent that moment and the space between the shoes and the floor, Diogo
describes his outcome as “a metaphor for the brand and for the goals of all who practice and love sports”.
