Kayleigh Thompson - Nike Flipper

Scientists believe we may some day be underwater, in a sense, we are returning to where we came from.

The principal restriction to the more extended use of training shoes The Nike Flipper was inspired by triathlons, lifeguards and rock pool climbing.

A shoe that has flipper characteristics: it would be waterproof with swimming capabilities, with water vents to prevent the shoes from filling up. The product could be useful for lake swimming and ocean swimming as well as running. Scientists believe we may some day be underwater, in a sense, we are returning to where we came from.

"I really don't know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it's because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it's because we all came from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have, in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came." - John F. Kennedy Jr, 1962

While the Nike Flipper functions well as a running shoe, it also enhances our swimming capabilities. The flipper would be able to extend out with a pivot point type mechanism. The mechanism will be extendable when needed, and able to fold underneath the shoe when not needed. The flipper would be made from strong light weight rubber plastic, so it would not weigh down the shoe when it is being worn on land.
